A9 Works

Following the attendance of Wills Bros Group, Transport Scotland and Jacobs at our community council meeting on 28th May 2026, please see below a summary of the discussion:

Construction is now underway across the project, with the establishment of 20 access points along the length of the project that allow us to carry out works like site clearance and earthworks that help get the area ready for construction, as well as opening our main site office compound near Kindallachan and other satellite it compounds along the length of the project.

Progress update

Since contract award in July 2025, the project team have undertaken preparatory works. These works help get the project underway and include:

  • the installation of the new site offices and storage areas
  • site-wide environmental surveys and mitigation measures to minimise our impact on the environment, including preventing silt from getting into the waterways
  • engineering surveys
  • site clearance, including tree removal and
  • traffic management development and approvals.

Our current focus is construction of the new southbound carriageway, which will be located to the east side of the existing A9 carriageway. To enable these works, we have started installing over 20 new site access points from the existing carriageway. These sites will first help us with required tree and vegetation removal. Later, they will be used for construction access.

Environmental mitigation works are an essential and important part of the project. These works will help to protect the animals and plants that live along the A9. Mitigation measures are currently being put in place for bats, badgers, red squirrels, otters, beavers, nesting birds, reptiles and invasive plant species which is all part of managing construction works in a sensitive manner to minimise the impact on the local wildlife and fauna.
